dowse - I have never heard this used except to mean location of water by means of a forked stick. My favaorite exampe of the stupidity of it, is a column by Bill Cunni;ngham, in Boston “Herald” about fifty years ago, in which he told of a dowser who located water on Bermuda by pointing his dowsing stick at a map of Bermuda.
