The new captain of the Pilgrim, Dana's ship, meets him on the beach, where he is doing dirty job of getting hides
ready for shipment. Having heard that Dana is a scholar, the captain shows he is also a scholar, by quoting the first line of Virgil's Eclogues:
Tityre, tu patul&æ recubans sub tegmine fagi
I really had a job finding a translation of it:
Ahoy, Tityrus! You are always lying around that blooming beech tree, musing about oats. We sure do have fine and sweet grain. But wešre leaving home. You, Tityrus, are teaching ants to play the bells in the shadow of a forest of paperwhite amaryllis flowers
