Is "post partum" one word or two? Authorities seem to differ, as does usage.

I've always seen it as one word.

If Post is after and Partum is a form of parting it
seems logical to me it would be two words ... and the postpartum would be medical lingo!
But that's just me! Logical right to the edge of the precipice ... someone will happily push me over I am sure!

<nudge> think postpartum (or post-partum) depression..

this term began life as the Latin phrase post partum, but, as do many compounds, it is progressing from separate words to dashed-form to cleavage. google gives them a 1:4 ratio of occurrence (it seems not to differentiate between "post-partum" and "post partum").

[a]enigma, in its egalitarian manner, recognizes none of these forms.

..."cleavage" here meaning joining, not separation!

tsuwm, you are the wind beneath my wings! Wow, he's got some really strong wind, then (NO, not that kind!!)--he's mine, too.

this term began life
So, then postpartum is the postpartum of post partum?

Is there any difference between postnatal (depression) and post partum (depression)?

I don't see post as a separate word in English, when it means "after." We don't see pre as a separate word.

post is used in the video editing world, for something that is done after the shooting has taken place. "we'll fix that in post."

"we'll fix that in post."

Isn't that shorthand jargon for "post-production"?
