In reading Plutarch's Life of Lysander, he mentions that the Spartans' smallest unit of money was a "skewer" of iron called an obolus, and that six of them was called a drachma, since that was all that could be easil;y held in one hand. I had not before heard the etymolgy of this buy my dictionary confirms it.
