I would have thought the most common use of "Anglo-Saxon" would have been in talking about the history and culture of England between the departure of the Romans and the Norman conquest. Admittedly this might be more commonly done in England or Britain than in the US.

To quote a Dutch friend "You Anglo-saxons are so hung-up!" (The discussion was about topless beaches being illegal here.) His meaning was Britain and all the offspring cultures.
