Huh! And they say it's the younger generation that's lazy. Pasting it to get http://snurl.com/1lhl was too much work for your aged hands, eh, helen?

According to the OED there are many spellings of 'snath' and it is the pole or shaft of a scythe, as the catalogue link shows. It is a variant of 'snead' but all the forms are irregular and difficult to account for. Of snead, OED says it is 'Old English of obscure origin and not represented in any of the cognate languages'.

So there you are, you really needed to know that I'm sure!

Boo-hoo-hoo! I posted about snath over a year ago, but Search doesn't find it. It's the handle of the scythe.
Aneother spelling is "snead" which I learned a long time ago in and article about Sam Snead, famous golfer 50 years ago. I have cut quite a bit of hay in my time. The snath I used had an "S" shape rather different from European ones.

I used to know a young sailor named Schnath (has all the makings of a good limerick). I assumed it was a German family name. Might be the German equivalent of snath.
