Over in the W&F Limericks thread, Tross says: ya gotta cop to the nuts...

http://wordsmith.org/board/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=wordplay&Number=106260

For context, see the thread. What does "cop to" mean? And have any of you heard/read any expression brand-new to you?

In the interesting world of law enforcement, the word "cop" has many meanings. As a noun, it refers to a police officer. As a verb, however, it has several meanings. To "cop" may means to steal or, more generally, to acquire. To "cop a plea" means to admit guilt, often as part of a plea bargain to a lesser offense than originally charged or in return for a lighter-than-usual sentencing recommendation from the prosecutor. To "cop out" may mean admitting wrongdoing. There may be others ... but these are the ones with which I have familiarity, in that prisoners often speak to me in court in their own patois, expecting that I will understand it ... which I try desparately to do.

cop, meaning steal or general aquire, has been discussed.

one can cop a lipstick, (or from the old song,
"Shine me buttons with Brass-o,
its only tu'pence a tin,
you can cop or buy it at woolworths")

or cop a squat (sit down)

or cop a plea (as part of plea bargain, plead guilty to causing a 'disturbance', and not got to trial for shoplifting)

to cop out it to disown, or disemberse your self of something..

cop to mean steal/aquire is old (almost 300 years as i recall!)

Cor blimey, helen - you're ten times older than I thought!

Another meanig of "cop", over here, is to receive, or catch, something unpleasant - often punishment
"Cor, you won't 'alf cop it when your Ma finds out!"
or
"When I opened the door, I copped the full force of the gale in me phizz (i.e., face)"

cop-out: blatantly false reason not to do something, when the real reason is cowardice or similarly disreputable.

"To cop a feel"

This verb phrase means to grope another person, especially their more intimate parts, with the intent of sexual gratification ... or so I've been told.

"To cop a feel"-- with the subtext of sly, (stealing).

a guy doesn't cop a feel off a girlfriend, a masher does it in the subway!

ya gotta cop to the nuts...

I think the "cop to" part had it's origins in the plea bargin definition, that is, to admit guilt in something, so its meaning is "admit" or "admit I'm right about."

So "you gotta cop to the nuts" meant: you gotta admit the board does have its share of nuts! Totally tongue in cheek...

Another meaning or sense of "cop" as a noun is in the sense of "getting caught". Pretty much London English, as in "It's a fair cop, guv'nor, you got me bang to rights!"

Not that any crim worth his salt would say that, these days! There's always the chance of a technicality ...

Folks used to say "cop some pot" or "I've gotta cop", "did'ja cop," "can't cop" in referring to a marijuana, as in "I gotta cop a joint."

Thank you, Tross. You alone answered my question. And I'd take that tongue out of your cheek, btw. This place is rife with weirdos.

Intuitively, I would have put it slightly differently: You have to allow for the fact that..
