Hiya... I'm looking for some history of the name of my best friend's brand new baby. Her name is Alita, which is a variant spelling of Aleda. I haven't had much luck Googling for the etymology of these names, beyond finding their meaning: small winged one... Can anyone offer a website or somesuch that might have the history of these names? I am particularly interested in the root words for these names.
Thanks, Jason

Hi Jason,
Life is just too weird. My supervisor's wife just had a baby in November and guess what her name is - Alida. They say (and it makes sense to me, from my knowledge of Italian) that it means "winged one" in Latin. Since ali is wings, and the da ending sounds like past tense ta, I'm willing to believe them. Small world, eh?

Hi Jason and welcome to the monkey-house. I think that wwh has given you the best answer you're likely to get, ably seconded by our Newfie.
Stick around. New blood is meat and drink to this bunch of vampires!
