barne (like bearn, not like barn)
which is another name for a child, (i was told it was used exclusive for an infant, once, and was the 'conterpoint' to boy-that is, barne was a infant girl. but now is more general for infant/small child of either sex)

but i just learned Mardy as an other Northern UK term for an infant/small child....any one know this term? or anything about it?

I know of 'bairne', of troy. Sometimes, it is spelt with the e and sometimes without; chiefly Scottish. And yes, it means child, as in, 'a wee bairn'.

Quite a few years ago, Mike Barnicle, long time columnist for Boston Globe wrote an
article stating his family name was derived from a Viking ancestor who yelled :
"Bairn ni Kill" (or something llike that) on raids, meaning "Don't kill babies".
He later got fired for fabricating sources.

...barne (like bearn, not like barn

'Barn' (pronouced like US's) is Norway's word for child/children as well.

I just call 'em 'shorty's'.

Here's one place where spelling is *truly discretional (eg. "shorties")... even google counts them perty similar... does this mean "shorty" ain't a werd?)

As a family joke between the ex an' me, we called ours "enanos tortuadores"... torturing midgets.

Mike Barnicle sure got his. He left The Globe in disgrace, proven to be both a plagerist and a fabulist. He can now be read on the pages of the New York Daily News: same column, different paper. Who says there is justice in the world of the mass media?

For the story of another fellow who did the same thing and reaped considerable rewards, as did Barnicle, see http://www.nytimes.com/2003/05/07/books/07GLAS.html?8bu
