You know, when it rains, and it just can't run away fast enough, and 'standing water' seems so insignificant. Can I offer 'macropuddle' to the language? Or perhaps 'novalake' or perhaps you know better?

plash - a shallow piece of standing water, a pool made by inundation or by the rain

(BTW, lakes, ponds, pools etc. all classify as standing water..)

welcome, John!

Plash is from the Old English plęsc. Splash may be an alteration of plash, according to the AHD.

Poodles piddle puddles. If you crossed a poodle with a Great Dane you could get
macropuddles.

Hi John!
Plash...I immediately thought of floating paper boats on it!
I really like this word. Great synesthesia too; you can almost 'hear' plash!

Curious about synonyms for 'standing water,' I checked 'plash' on MW Unabridged. Well, nothing much there. But there was a synonym for the verb 'plash' that I hadn't heard before:

spurtle

Silly-sounding word, spurtle. Here's the MW definition:

"Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): spurtled; spurtled; spurtling \]d.li, ]t()li\; spurtles
Etymology: freq. of 3spurt
transitive verb : to cover with spatterings : SPRINKLE
intransitive verb : to break forth suddenly in a stream or spatter <the white spurtling surf -- Russell Thacher> "

But then there's a noun, spurtle, that was definied as a spatula-like cooking implement (chiefly Scottish) used for turning griddle cakes. Wonder whether it was named the spurtle because of the spurtling sound of those griddle cakes cooking?
