From Internet:
The Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution provides that "no person
... shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself."
The right was created in reaction to the excesses of the Courts of Star
Chamber
and High Commission—British courts of equity that operated
from 1487-1641. These courts utilized the inquisitorial method of
truth-seeking as opposed to the prosecutorial, meaning that prosecutors
did not bear the burden of proving a case, but that sufficient "proof" came
from browbeating confessions out of the accused.

Called 'Star Chamber' because

According to Britain Express:

The Court of Star Chamber was named for the star pattern painted on the ceiling of the room at Westminster Palace where its meetings were held.

So, no, Kenneth Starr didn't have anything to do with it

No, et. I rarely read my AWAD since Anu's software doesn't send it to me anymore and hasn't for a long time.

From the site Faldage posted:

"Although the court could order torture, prison, and ines, it did not have the power to impose the death sentence. Under the Tudors Star Chamber sessions were public."

...and I'm too lazy to look up 'ines' tonight. I'm gonna assume it's a typo till tomorrow when I'm not feeling so lazy.

Dear WW: just to tease you, have you never noticed that Today's Word is clickable at
the very bottom of the screen?

Thanks for the reminder Dr. Bill - it will make keeping up with AWAD-related threads much easier.

Thanks etoin and Bill. And, Bill, I never read the bottom of the screen. With so many interesting discussions going on right before my eyes, why would I ever want to dive deeper? Anyway, I do apologize for not looking at the forum on which I was posting--I could have realized it was on the AWAD forum and could have tracked down Anu's comments first. Will at least try to remember to notice that from now on.
