In searching for something else, I found this:

LIBER m Roman Mythology
Pronounced: LIE-bur
Derived from Latin liber meaning "free". This was the name of a Roman fertility god.

So how did "liber" get to mean "book"?

Different words, Dr Bill. Liber, free is with a long i; liber, book is with a short i.

And liberi means children. Also, Liber was the Italian god of fertility, identified with Bacchus.

and presumabley related to the word liberty--

but fertility, linked with drink! results in children.

and having children reduces ones freedom!
