The AWAD for Day 1 is "oneiromancy".
The "Theme for the Week" is "words related to divination and prediction".

If you think what you dream will come true
Oneiromantic is what they call you.
Never take to your bed
A sad story - instead
Pop a Valium, or better yet, two.

oneiromancy (o-NY-ruh-man-see) noun

The practice of predicting the future by interpreting dreams.

From Greek oneiros (dream) + -mancy (divination). [per Anu]

The AWAD for Day 2 is "Cassandra".

Cassandra was cursed with a vision
Which brought her only derision.
She was right in the end
But she had not a friend
Who was grateful for her precognition.

Cassandra (kuh-SAND-ruh) noun

One who prophesies disaster and whose warnings are unheeded.

After Cassandra in Greek mythology who received the gift of prophecy but was later cursed never to be believed. [per Anu]

Predicting the future is fun
But when your predicting is done
Don't bet on your hunch
Or the fatidic crunch
Will strike you down like a gun.

fatidic (fay-TID-ik) adjective

Of or relating to predicting fates; prophetic.

[From Latin fatidicus, from fatum (fate) + dicere (to say). Ultimately from Indo-European root deik- (to show or to pronounce solemnly) that is also the source of other words such as judge, verdict, vendetta, revenge, indicate, dictate, and paradigm.] per Anu

I don't think Wordsmith's discussion
of Cassandra mentions what seems to me an important
part of her, namely that to call someone a Cassandra
is a real pejorative, they are regarded as noxious
nay-sayers, gloom-mongers, predicting only tragedies,
never happy things
.

A sagacious old-timer reminds me, in a PM, that when we call a person "a Cassandra", we are talking about a naysayer, and a party pooper, and perhaps worse.

I have revisited my ALAD with this new insight in mind:

Cassandra was known for her gloom.
Her predictions were all full of doom.
Yet those who believed
Were often relieved
That fate destroys every bloom.

To find water under your land
Just take a forked stick in hand.
The stick will know
If there's water below
But never dowse in the sand.

dowse (douz) verb tr., intr.

To search for underground water or minerals with a divining rod.

"Dowsing is usually performed using a forked twig. With two ends on each hand and the other end pointing out, a dowser walks forward and the pointer is supposed to lead towards water and vibrate when near water. ---". Anu

If you ever get caught in a bind
And you simply can't make up your mind
Draw a stick "Yes" or "No"
Sortilege where to go
And leave all of your troubles behind.

sortilege(SOR-tl-ij) noun

1. Divination by drawing lots. [per Anu]

Sometimes also called cleromancy, the most common form of it uses two objects, one of which is marked "Yes" and the other is marked "No".

This source notes that "sortilege", also known as "sordition", is "perhaps the oldest form of divination known to mankind, and its practice is described in the Old Testament and in several of Homer's works."

Since no one looks at your post,
you click and click and then boast
"More people read me
than the bugs in an ash tree
My limericks are annoying and don't scan."

Can you go away now, please? And take Paris Hilton and your other sex obsessions with you?

Since no one looks at your post

Almost no-one looks at my post
Except one of whom I can boast
She hates me so much
She's always in touch.
That's the attention I covet the most. :)
