I hope that the following sketchy information will be enough to elicit some recognition of the series of books in question. When I moved to Providence, RI, USA about 30 years ago, I had lots of time to my self. An acquaintance offered a paperback to read. It was about a Tibetan monk’s adventures with man-flying kites, lost valleys and “extinct” creatures, fighting Communism or some such invaders, levitation, long long runs up and down the Himalayas… Yes I was in something of a fog in those days, but the reading lifted my spirits. There were several books in the series. I know it’s not much to go on, but any feedback would be appreciated. Muddled but merry, O’bow

Oh! Excitement! I remember that book, too - and it was a looooong time ago for me too. Darn Darn Darn if I can remember the author's name - Rampa - Rampong - Oh Shoot! maybe it will pop into my head if I let it alone awhile. As I recall there was a chapter on the opening of the Third Eye ... do you recall that as part of the book too?

Good going, wow! I'll bet these are them: "Doctor From Lhasa", "Feeding the Flame", and "The Hermit", by T. Lobsang Rampa. The commercial link where I found them is in Acrobat Reader format and uncopyable, but it gives synopses: you can see if they jog your memories. http://www.skybooksusa.com/c0104/ch19.pdf By the way, I found that by Googling 'Tibetan monk fiction Ramp'.

Yeah, the monk, Dr Tuesday Lobsang Rampa, was a Briton and quite the kook. I have a book by his Siamese cat which he translated into English. Living With the Lama; hilarious. His books are still in print, but then so are Madame Blavatsky's. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lobsang_Rampa

Thank You Jackie – those look promising. I tried various combos of monk+kite+looney fraud and the like, but got nothing that jogged my memory like these did. (Somehow), I’m on good terms with the librarians of our small town’s two libraries, but we only found “Dr.” Tuesday’s Chapters of Life. That one is more Madame Blavatsky-like. I like the message; promoting contemplation and peacefulness, just don’t ask me for money or my first born. wow, it seems like you got it too! Rampa it is. I’ll let you know which ones are the adventure stories when I finally get my eyes on them again. I’d be well served by Jackie’s book of Googling Tips too, etaoin. jheem, do you know what the cat’s native tongue was? Thank you all. You’re amazing. OK, what am I thinking now…? PS When I do "Check spelling" here, the alternate choices are so interesting and unusual. I wonder if this is by design. O'bow

Yes, the book Living With the Lama is "by Mrs Fifi Greywhiskers, P.S.C. / translated from the Siamese Cat language by / T. Lobsang Rampa." Copyright 1964.
From chapter one: "Mother-to-Be was shrieking her head off. 'I want a Tom' she yelled, 'A nice STRONG Tom!' The noise, the People said, was TERRIBLE. But then, Mother was renowned for her loud calling voice. At her insistent demand, all the best catteries in Paris were combed for a suitable Siamese Tom with the necessary degree. Shriller and louder grew Mother-to-Be's voice. More and more distraught grew the People as they turned with renewed strength to the search."
When I found my copy of the book, what was next to it on the shelf but: Pussy Willow by Mama San Ra-ab Rampa: "the wife of T. Lobsang Rampa tells an enchanting story of life with a famous author ... and the cats which ruled their household."

It's plain to see that amongst y'all, there is no topic that is misterious. I continue to be amazed (wowed), humbled and inspired, but I shall be more careful what I think around here in the future.

After leaving an accidentally cryptic note for our unit clerk I was teasing her about the need to read minds. Her response - "Oh, I can do that. But there's so much garbage in there that I don't like to!"
