I've many times seen it as "insofar as", and just now
got dozens of hits when I searched for it.

try and find concensus on this one;
'in so far as' or 'in-so-far as' - 527kg
'insofar as' - 347kg

but, http://www.bartleby.com/68/88/3188.html says the latter is conventional.

Over this side of the pond, I believe that "insofar" is more usual. Having said that, I have seen both the other forms over here frequently enough to think that all are acceptable.

(Not that that is saying much - these days all sorts of peculiar sentence constructions and word spellings pass as "accepteable".) [/grouch]
