Evidently they've lost touch with the European Space Agency's ambitious Mars probe, Beagle 2. They believe it's only a temporary glitch, though. Let's hope so:

Well, it's now officially lost. The beagle probably got savaged by one of Princess Anne's friendly bull terriers ... should have used a corgi, I suppose.

Bienvenue, Count.

Yeah, that is a pity. I'm assuming the name comes from Darwin's Beagle?

Also, I just heard a touching little story about how Spirit and Opportunity were named. Y'all know?

Well, the beagle probably didn't watch the video of how it supposed to land and just got it wrong, I suppose. It's all in the training with dogs, you know.

I do not think the loss of the beagle should be a surprise 1/3 of all missions fail. Maybe they should rethink their methods even I could tell you shooting a beach ball to mars and wishing for the best is a bad idea. But hell it works 1/3 of the time

the other 1/3 of the time

Hey! If the Car Guys can have three halves in their radio show the Count can have two thirds in his Mars missions.

Known unknowns are things we know we don't know. Part of the recent Rumsfeld Trilogy:

Known knowns - Things we know that we know.
E.g. Saddam had weapons of mass destruction

Known unknowns - Things we know we don't know.
E.g., What he did with them.

Unknown unknowns - Things we don't know we don't know.
E.g., Well, this one is hard to offer an example of, since we don't know what they are.

The Unknown knowns are the ones he (Rumsfeld) left out. They would be things we don't know that we know and are almost as hard to show examples of as the Unknown unknowns, and for similar reasons.

Lautreamont. L'autre amont. 'The other upstream/uphill/above'? Just wondering. Could help make the known unknown better known?

Ed: Yes it is really disappointing about Beagle 2.
