Can anybody list here a cool way to remember how we move from whatever is the top group to genus and species? Family is somewhere--and order and class. But what would be a good way to remember the classification terms--the general categories? Somebody out there is bound to have had a teacher who came up with a cool mnemonic--like the one for the planets:
 Mercury
 Venus
 Earth
 Mars
 ...All are planets--not stars!
 Jupiter
 Saturn
 Uranus
 Neptune
 Pluto
 All revolve around the Sun...
 In tune and tempo!

I'll take anything on the animal kingdom. Anything that is simple and (always) preferably humorous.

I remember something about King Phillip.
Googling gives us King Phillip came over for good spaghetti, or King Phillip cuts open five green snakes.

 Phylum

 Order
 Family
 Genus

My (Mercurey) very (Venus) educated (Earth) mother (Mars) just (Jupiter)sat (Saturn) upon (Uranas) Noodle (Neptune) Pudding (Pluto).
of course, now that Pluto's status as a planet has been called into question, my mother could have just sat upon Nothing, or Noodles (not made into pudding!) or any number of things..
I have seen King Philip, but its not one i learned at any point-- (so it only half works for me, since i don't always remember what all the letters stand for!)

Thanks. I absolutely love King Phillip cut open five green snakes. I cannot stand the thought of a snake, although one held in the hand of somebody else is ok. King Phillip cut open five green snakes. Very good. !!! | | |

Oh, c'mon, Max. St. Patrick was Welsh, and he gigged in Ireland.

St. Patrick
I think he's referring to the fact that New Zealish snakes don't think.

You're right, Fong, Zild snakes don't think, for much the same reason that gryphons don't fly, and centaurs don't run.

Man very early made jars stand up nearly perpendicular.
