Horrible, yet Wonderful movie..... I hated it because it was trite and
schmaltzy and predictable. It tried so hard to be a "Classic" movie...but we all know a movie's "classic definer" cannot be forced.
I loved it because I enjoy any movie based on real events (even when fake, additional story lines are added) and I love any movie that is a period piece, complete with costumes and architecture; and any movie that depicts the luxuries of the ultra rich. I also love the music.....sooooo haunting and beautiful. I own both the Video, and the original soundtrack CD....I haven't watched the movie in years, but I listen to the CD at least once a month.
You should rent it, Jackie!

I didn't see it either, why go to a movie when you already know the ending. I work with real life stories every day, when I pay for entertainment I want happy endings. If the adds read "Heart rending", "Thought provoking" or "Deeply insightful" you'll find me next door watching the old black and white comedies. My guilty pleasure ... science fiction - the bad, corny kind. If you can see the strings on the model space ships then I'm in the right theater.

Dear Zed - I am with you - Give me a good laugh and/or a happy ending every time.
It's good for you, according to my doctor and some recent studies ... seems a happy show lowers blood pressure and lets you get to sleep easily where the news or violent shows get you all roiled up and less likely to get restful sleep.
Looks like we have been ahead of the herd! Ain't we great ? ! ? !!

Well, I'll chime in here - I haven't seen Titanic either. Nor do I want to see it. Something "smarmy" or too cute about Leonardo...not that I'm necessarily against seeing/looking at cute guys! There are several of the "thought provoking" or serious movies that I haven't seen, as well. I keep thinking I should see them - but when I look for a movie to rent (or more often, borrow from the library), I always look for "mind candy" - comedy, light-hearted, no-brainers.

Why read a novel? Because it gives you insight and perspective that you can't get from straight facts. Duh the ship sinks, but what were people's lives like. Even if it's fictionalized, it doesn't meana similar person couldn't have existed.

actually, i think de capria is a very good actor, who is often judge on his good looks..
he was incredible in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and very different again in The Beach, and different again in Titanic.
he has made some bad movies, but he has never been a bad actor.
many years ago, i was reading a propagand story (a novel) by Helen MacInnes(think it was her)-- it was writen in 1943-- and it was about an espionge plan being put in place in France,(organizing the underground) and i remember wondering how it was going to end... i mean i knew how WWII ended..but she didn't at the time. knowing the ending (WWII) didn't make the story any less exciting!

DiCaprio worked in Gangs of New York (which I'll admit surprised me, I wasn't expecting much out of him...'course, for the convincing-ness of the Irish accent you'll have to check in with Rubrick)...not a great performance, but not bad either. 'Course, it's hard to fall flat when you've got a director like Scorcese pulling a performance out of you.

OK so I got carried away. I know the ending of Casablanca every time I see it and it isn't even "happy". I never claimed to be logical or even consistant. As for fictionalized characters and subplots. I forget who said it but: non-fiction is about facts, fiction is about truths.

I don't go to movies frequently, but I've found that, too often, when I do stir myself to go to the theater to see one of the so-called blockbusters, I'm disappointed: It was good, but not THAT good! The hype raises my expectations to an unreasonable level and I'm invariably let down. Which may be better than being left out when everyone is talking about a particular film.

I disagree with Bingley about the original Star Wars being boring. At the time it was avant garde and although the story line was crap the effects were amazing for the time. I've seen the first of the prequels (Chapter Two? - dunno), and it all seemed like "ho-hum, another day in the special effects department".

As a story most of it was OK, but I much preferred Close Ecounters for the special effects. The worst thing in Star Wars for me was the would-be climactic fighter pilot battle against the Death Star, which was unforgiveably long. I was just sitting there saying, "Ok get on with it. Nowcan we get back to the story please?"

Well, I said the story line was crap. You have to fill out the movie somehow. I agree, though, that the whole Deathstar thing was rather overlong! Blame Peter Cushing. Seems easiest.

I tend to skip the hyped up movies partly because they seldom live up to the hype and partly because when a lot of people tell me I MUST!!! do something I immediately don't want to. (and partly because I have slightly odd tastes that don't match those of the great everyone.)

I just meant that on the rare occasion when I have seen the current "movie of the year," my opinion that is wasn't that good is semi-informed. However, gotta admit a twinge of pride myself in not having seen Titanic.

Since this is officially a word board - where did "wuss" come from? I don't recall it from thirty years ago, or even twenty - did I lead a sheltered life? Is it perhaps some kind of odd elision of "no use at all to us"? (Or is it futile to speculate about the evolution of slang?)

I don't know when or where it started, (my cousins who grew up in Levitton LI use it..)
i think it came from puss-- a variation on scaredee cat..
It seems to mean unmanly, cowardly, wimpish.
a few years ago, at a family reunion picnic, one of my levitton cousins commented that he thought i didn't like him... i explained that i didn't much when he was a teen-- since i thought he and his brothers were provincial. He retaliated (mock) by attacking me with a water gun,(and telling his brothers I called them wusses..) I retaliated by telling him, "it's obvious you still don't know the meaning of provincial!"
The pen might be a mighter sceptor than the sword, but when its words against water guns, you get wet!
