Hi, Sweetie, guess I'm first in for a change. Here's one: "CHIFFONIER - wig maker or ragpicker...". This is from a site that is no longer "in service", but here 'tis anyway.

Here's another: A perute maker was another name for wig maker. From

Edit--AUGH! Dr. Bill, you snuck in ahead of me!

Dear Jackie: I regret appearing to be pushy. I previously knew "chiffonier" only as a piece
of furniture. I did also find it at same site about colonial occupation titles, with the
definition you gave. I have heard wigs called "rugs" but only in jest.

I'll bet that word 'perute' should have been perruque, Dr. Bill. Thanks for the cue. [grumble--elbowed aside by an octogenarian...what next...grumble...]

"Wig" is peruca in Portuguese, if anyone wants to know (often helps with Latin etymology).

In Spanish, the word for wig is peluca and a wig maker is known as a peluquero/a, the same name given to barbers. My dictionary says that peluca comes from the Latin perruca.

Ok. So is there a word for a wigmaker who specializes in merkins?
