What IS this word?! Is it English? I found it in a dictionary of wordplay as an example of a word where there are vowels every other letter, but I'm pretty sure it's a real word.

Ah ha! Thanks! vowels every other letter: I think it meant regardless of any extra vowels in between.

The humuhumunukunukuapuaa was, for awhile, the state fish of Hawaii, but after the enabling legislation ran out the state legislature failed to renew it so the fish was sunk. who-moo-/who-moo-/new-koo/-new-koo/-ahhh-poo/-ahhh-/ahhhh! There is a glottal stop between the last ywo a'a s! It's very pretty too!

I learned about this fish a few years ago when my kids read about it in "Ranger Rick" magazine. It is pretty! My understanding is that the name means "colors all mixed up" or something similar.

I guess it needed something to make it feel big out there among all those predators.

Yep, after all, they say the pen is mightier than the sword... I guess there could be some obscure link there!
