In news this morning was obituary of Yousef Karsh, who took the wonderful portrait of Winston Churchill early in WWII. It shows Chuchill glowering indomitably, an effect achieved by snatching the cigar out of his mouth at the last instant. I don't have right software, but those who do can see the portrait at: http://www.winstonchurchill.org/ffhkars.htm

A few years ago our local museum hosted a Karsh exhibit, which set attendance records. He could have staked his reputation on any of the dozens of portraits on display. Along with the Churchill, one of my favorites is his study of Ernest Hemingway.

It's not your software, wwh. It's just an html error; the person who crafted the web page may not have realized that image source tags are case sensitive. You can view the picture at http://www.winstonchurchill.org/karsh.jpg

Dear Verlangen: I'm using Netscape 4.7, and am satisfied with it, except that I get pictures sent me which it can't handle, I get an icon representing an image, with one corner torn off. I thought that it was more of the same. Thanks for your URL. I actually think that picture was a help to the war effort: "There will always be an England!"

as a side note, I believe that Karsh was a relative of Raffi, the children's folk singer. father or brother(without doing more research about Karsh's age...).
formerly known as etaoin...

Dr. Bill, I don't think I had heard of Mr. Karsh; and what a wonderful article--thank you! And thank you, Verlangen, for your link. I bid you welcome. Hi, slithy! [snuggle e]

Thank you, Bill, for posting about Karsh. He was truly a genius - obviously not just with a camera, but with people. The Winston Churchill shot may be his most famous but there are others dear to my heart, such as the one of Stephen Leacock and the one of Audrey Hepburn....My mother likes the one of Helen Keller but I have to confess I wasn't so keen on the double image - found it more confusing than anything else, since I thought perhaps the second person was Helen Keller's helper and teacher (can't remember her name).
Many, many great works. He captured people's souls in a way few portrait photographers manage.
Let us go in peace to love and serve the board.

Anne Sullivan was Helen's first and most influential "carer". She was more than that - a teacher, a friend and an almost constant companion. She died in 1936 - 32 years before Helen. Helen was looked after by Polly Thomson from then until 1960 when she too died of a stroke. Winnie Corbally, the nurse who looked after Polly in her last few years, took over Polly's duties for Helen's final eight years.
They are all buried together in Arcan Ridge, Westport, Connecticut - the town where Helen lived for most of her life.

Thanks, Fiberbabe and Rubrick (great info, R!). I always squirm when I can't remember someone's name I feel I SHOULD remember - Annie Sullivan was sooo important to Helen Keller, I was mortified not to be able to remember her name.
I get the same feeling when I realize I don't know the names of all the women who were shot down in Montreal at the polytechnic all those years ago (1989, I think it was), just for being women, and remember, with deep chagrin, that I do know the name of their killer. Very icky feeling. I want to remember good and important people - not their killers. Thank God my memory has somehow subdued or erased the name of John Lennon's killer - please nobody remind me!
