A term well known to small boat sailors, along with pintle, which is how we hang a removable rudder. From Ansted, A. ; A Dictionary of Sea Terms, Glasgow, 1928. I seem to remember from my navy days that there was a "Gudgeon pin" associated with the anchor shackle on the very large anchors that we carried. The pin was a fine conical shape and was hammered into a tapered hole in the boss of the shackle to secure the loose pintle.
