wwh, gambrinous was one of the words we had on that drinking thread a while back. tsuwm may have included it in his useless words, but I'm fairly sure it's one of Mrs. Byrne's--almost positive it is.
I loved that drinking thread, especially learning about heeltap, the liquor that's left in the bottom of the glass. Many a child has slipped in to get a quick taste of heeltap, I would bet, in drinking homes. I am NOT advocating drinking, by the way, and most especially NOT the drinking of children. It's just a subject that's fun to read about from time to time...
...as in your gambrinous reminder.

Eewww! Just the idea of liquefying them turns my delicate little stomach.

Dear WW: lt was late and I was too tired to check. So whack my knuckles with your ruler. Which reminds me of a real beaut of a teacher I had in fourth grade. She had an eighteen inch birch ruler that she used only to hit kids' hands. She tried it on me, and at the last instant I snatched my hand away, and she hit her own hand very hard. I got taken out of school, and my mother taught me at home for a year and a half. I was very sorry when I had to go back to school.

So, I write about drinking children and eating--what was it--my friend shrimp tails? I'm gonna have the reputation of being a carnivore Edit: I meant cannibal here instead of carnivore. Good grief. fersure if I don't start editing what I write before I post it.
Should I have written that "I don't advocate children's drinking" for clarity?
PS: Bill, I didn't point up the gambrinous covered in an earlier thread to whack your knuckles at all! I just brought it up because some people who are new here could search it out to find that drinking term thread that was so much fun. I'm the one who's too lazy to look it up!

So, WW, tell me about your childhood. an hour later. You have the Diomedes Complex. Take this medicine, and never go near horses.

There is (or used to be, I haven't checked recently) a German pub in Bandung called Gambrinus.

Dear WW: since Bingley reopened the thread, I went back and checked. You failed to note that I posted about "gambinous. so naturally all those posts about Gambinus were not reported. That o made a whole lot of difference. Sob, sob.

Dear tsuwm. I am having even more trouble with my vision. And my recent memory is not what it ;used to be, to retain spellings from one window to another. I regret that my shortcomings detract from the enjoyment of the board.

Don't worry Dr. Bill. I googled "gambinus" and got a site with a link to the Gambinus Company, a beer distributor in San Antonio, TX. Clicking on the link led me to the website for the Gambrinus Company. So I guess the r doesn't make that much difference after all. tsuwm is just bucking for head nit-picker over Juan.

I have just been reading C. S. Lewis's That Hideous Strength, which was first published in 1945. Bucking is there used to represent a very similar word that could not be printed at that time. For example:
"I couldn't tell that the bucking car was going to break down, could I?"
Who, I wonder is bucking for non-head nit picker?

In West Side Story, it was "...Gee, Officer Krupke, Krup you!"

Well, on the record, anyway. (Remember LPs?)
Come to think of it, the vinyl disc [not to mention the shellac one] has no more right to the term "record" than the present CD does. They are all equally "recordings".
