If you mean its typical meaning, I suggest it is an artistic style or category - the word comes from the Latin word genus, suggesting 'birth or origin'. I hope that helps a bit. Few of our words pronounce the R at the back of the throat, as is done with Genre. If I may make a pun, it is almost in a genre of its own in English!
