I'd like to organize a chat schedule for AWADers. There is a site -- www.mlive.com -- which has a chatxtra feature which permits the creation of an AWAD chatroom. I would love for us to be able to occasionally connect in a simultaneous group, free to talk about anything without concern that our blatherings are permanently stored or are not sufficiently word-related.
The time to do it is probably the most pressing issue, since AWADers span the globe.
Sounds as though it could be fun. Only thing I wonder about is that seldom are there enough of us online at same time, and no consistency about having the same group present at the same time. I'm game to give it a try.
Oh, my! Are you talking about that thing where it's in "real time" and the words show up at the bottom of the screen? Mercy! Have no idea how that works! I'd need instructions for the computer-use-impaired. But I'm game.
(You can chat without registering, but please register so you can use your board name and we'll know which beloved AWAD friend you are.)
Click on the box at the top of the mlive page which is titled "Chat Xtra."
In the box which says, "start chatting now," click on the "go chat" orange arrow button under the "choose a main room" dropdown menu.
On the left will be a list of people in the chat room you are in. Click on your name.
To the right of that list will be a box containing the conversations in the chat room. Underneath that is a box in which to type your messages. In the message box, type </j awad> without the angle brackets. Be careful; the system is case sensitive.
Once you hit enter after typing in /j awad, you'll be in the awad chatroom.
On the opening page of mlive, in the lower lefthand corner, is a "member info" box. Click on it, and then click on the hypertext link where it says, "Not a member? Join now." And then fill in the blanks.
I'm sorry i can't join-- but chat rooms are specically named as a no no..
But its a great idea-- you might want to set up a schedule-- "New chats start ever other hour." (Even hours greenwich time-- 12, 2, 4, etc. ) since we span the globe-- we could just check on greenwich time to see if the room is likely to be "in use" Wouldn't that would make it easier for everyone? rather than random checks? after you first check greenwich time, you know that your local time is in sync (also even) or out of sync.. and once every two hours is a nice window..
Aaaahhhhh! This is scaring me! I was in there with a whole bunch of strangers! Nonono-ooo, no strangers! I don't think I did the final message box right: nowhere on my keyboard do I see that little symbol you have in front of the j, in j awad. Help, please.
Just to the left of the right hand shift key - under the question mark. Thanks, but...on my keyboard, that's the plain forward slash: /. Hers is curved. I have ~, but not a vertical one of those, which is what hers looks like to me. Or do I need new glasses?
I wanted to try this and showed up just after the appointed time. I was willing to register, and even got to use Hyla as my nickname (not too many tree frogs on-line in Michigan, I guess) - but I kept getting a server error when I tried to access the chat rooms.
I could see that Sparteye, and pi, and BYB, and FiberBabe, were all chatting away, but it wouldn't let me in. Did I get on the "Not Invited" list, or did others have trouble?
I kept getting a server error when I tried to access the chat rooms.
Don't feel singled out, hyla. Those of us who *were* there each got booted several times, particularly when we added each other to our "friends lists". Were you able to get into the general lobby, and got booted only when you typed /j awad? Perseverance may be the key =) Give it another shot; we had some fun chatting today.
I didn't even get so far as that - when I hit that little orange "Go chat!" button, things ground to a halt, so I never had the chance to type anything.
You can't access the awad chatroom unless you are a member. It says you don't have enough "points" when you try. When I tried to become a member, it clearly rejected something but appeared to internally crash rather than tell me what the problem was. I tried twice, but was not registered. Perhaps my nickname isn't pornographic enough?
It's too gimmicky and seems short of a good front end. Sorry, Sparteye, good idea, bad venue.
