I assume that "veritable" was once pronounced the way it is spelled, ending with "-bluh" in the French way. When did A-S words like "kettle, bottle, settle, spittle, nettle, mettle, fettle, little," become "kettel, bottel, settel, spittel, nettel, mettel, fettel, littel"? Or were they always "misspelled"?

Spelling is a strange and variable thing. OE cetel, cetil, chytel, ME kettel, chytel, etc.; OE lȳtel. ME litelle, litle, litl, littel, little, etc.

You, too, can have fun looking the rest of these up: for Old English and Middle English.

(Edited to fix typo.)
