A friend is combining his goldsmith shop with his silver jewelry shop and is looking for a new name to celebrate the union. Can anyone out there think of a word or a small grouping of words to express this concept? All languages considered.

Hm. This is an interesting one.... wish my Latin were up to the challenge. I find it woefully lacking, having last cracked a Latin text about 20 years ago, and then at the ungodly hour of 8am, and it was Church Latin too!

But what comes to mind is a mix of the latin:
Argent Aurum (heraldry?)

just thought of that old Girl Scout verse:
"Make new friends but keep the old/One is silver and the other gold."

My husband just blurted out: "Metal Vanity"

I'm sure more and better ideas will follow...but be sure to post what you eventually decide on!

i like Ouro Prata, which would be a loose translation of Portuguese "Prata e Ouro" (silver and gold)

Contra dancing is the most fun you can have while keeping all your clothes on. Actually, it's similar to square dancing (many of the same moves) only it's a progressive dance. You start with your partner on your side, part of a line of dancers facing another line of dancers. A caller calls the moves, you dance the group of moves with one other couple, then move on and dance the same set of moves with the next couple, etc. The lines move in "contra" to each other. There is much dizzy swinging of your partner, who sometimes is NOT your partner :) and everyone has the silliest grin!

¡Bienvenida al foro!
My beloved grand mother was a Consuelo too. We familiarly call them Conchas or Conchitas. In Spain, never in Argentina.

Speaking of Argentina, what about "Argentgold"?

Following the heraldry idea: Argent Or.

People will flock in to find out "or what?"

If they happen to be in Montana, Oro y Plata is the state motto.

Loganamnosis (An AWAD selection) ... is what I have trying to remember what the word is for when gold is applied to silver ... ANYway would that word be of help in naming the shop?
Or your friend could go straightforward with "The Silver and Gold Shop" and make it easy for people to find what they're looking for.

i suppose you could resort to 'Precious Metals', if you were feeling uninspired.

or The Golden Silversmith? (play on the words Gold and Silversmith, for those who are even less perceptive than me)

Dear Consuelo, *please* let us know what the decision is whether or not one of the suggestions given here is used.

And while we are on the subject of naming : Did anyone ever hear from the Poster who wanted ideas on naming young horses?

How about The Silver Door (silvered ore/ silver d'or/ silv'adore)?

Ænigma suggests 'dabble' - next!

How about something incorporating, or punning on, the word 'vermeil'?

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have worked their brains on this. I have submitted this first crop of suggestions to my friend and his partner for their perusal. Hopefully, they will be able to agree on a cool name and not do the boring thing-pairing their last names!
