I realized that you should not continue doing something for so long that you no longer take pleasure in it.

Is "it" needed?

Yes, it is required. I can't think of any way to say what you want to say without it. Maybe you should not continue doing something that you no longer take pleasure in but then you've reworded it, leaving out the for so long.
