Ha! Second place is always best if you want to live quietly. No stormy ovations, privacy violations and no more money than you can handle wisely. After all, like the old incunabula already told us: "Sic transit gloria etcetera".
Thanks Rhuby!

"Sic transit gloria .....".
Is this the motto of an ambulance company?

I will now "reveal" my explanation promised in the other thread (I didn't want to do it prior to the voting): I did not submit a daffynition due to an uncharacteristically busy social life that week. I went to three big gatherings: an extended family get-together, Thanksgiving, and a going-away party.
I voted for during the earliest period of typography because I thought that sounded like it was an incubation time.

Good thinking, Jackie. The etymology (according to my dictionary!) is from Latin for swaddling clothes, or cradle.
There is also another use of incunabulum in English, meaning, "the earliest stage of development of a thing."

My explanation: I thought e was incorrect because Sumer, Akkadia, Assyria, Babylon and Persia were geographically dispersed (or so I thought I never checked) and they could not have similarity in the script. Also, I *know* that Persian has a script like Urdu and Arabic and I *thought* Sumerian script must be some thing cuneiform like the Mesopotamian script - so no similarity. I liked the daffy because I like scripts. I know... a lot of incorrect thinking and no LingIU - but then you are not supposed to LIU.

Avy, I lifted the list right from the definition of cuneiform, which I happened to be looking at when Rhuby posted the word.

A treasure trove of handwritten manuscripts>> I recently visited the Australians National Library to see an exhibition of some manuscripts, INCUNABULA, music scores. autographs, political writings .... from way back. People like Bach, Beethoven, Curie, Dante, Darwin, Dickens, Einstein, Galileo, Kafka, Machiavelli, Luther, Mozart, Michelangelo, Napoleon, Newton and Nightingale to name a few. ( Part of the 'Ten Centuries of Manuscript Treasures' from the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin). Well worth the long, long wait in the queue to get there!
Thanks for game Rhuby and for vote of confidence olbow.....insane as it was LOL
