Looking for word that refers to a sound made by a device that simulates real function sound from another device but actually has no function. This might be the shutter noise made by telephone camera

I think he's looking for the name of the machine that makes the (recorded?) noises. Foley walkers are people that shuffle about and make all kinds of background sounds, right?
