Yes, my first thought and the context made me think it is much too theatrical a word to use for a simple cry baby.Quite pompous. I tried to comfort my lachrymose sister. Nah...

I was reminded of Mozart's Requiem and
also the movie Amadeus, where the anguish is emphasized
so well with the music in the background.
