I have submitted the following post at frdb:
\\PS Ray I have encountered a really, really serious glitch: Unlike other sites I visit, frdb evidently doesn't allow a non-member to access a thread from a link. For two years now using the address bar I've been sending links from frdb to threads in other sites and to my correspondents all over the world, but it was only a few days ago I learned that at least one of these sites none of them who weren't members of frdb could thus access the thread
You may want to fix this glitch as it makes frdb virtually worthless to many of us
Here is Ray's reply and my response following it. Was I correct in my assumptionOriginally Posted By: RayJ;5817888You have to be a member to view some forums. This is not a glitch. This is a standard practice of all forums on the internet.

I had understood that standard practice was to prevent a non-member from contributing a post, which f course makes sense, but to let anyone access threads to just read because otherwise how can you interest a potential participant in joining up

Unfortunately they haven't yet revealed how one knows which ones are accessible but I will let you know if I find out

there seem to be two general types of forum organization: one manages to exist by being self-policed (like Wordsmith) and the other is heavily moderated - I think your interlocutor at fdrb is right about standard practice for the latter; he's just over-generalizing in including *all forums.

They really mean well but heavy moderation seems unnecessaryQuote:That was also my guess
