Well he got his prediction right, here in the Great Plains.
I have 9 inches of snow in my back yard.

I personally wish the beautiful white stuff would stick to
pictures on calendars, or at least come in color after the
first two or three snowfalls each season. White is so boring.

white would be fine, if only it stayed white; but after a couple of days it gets.. dirty.

I guess if the glass is half full.....
But I agree with tsuwm, if only it would stay white. Maybe high in the
mountains???Here in the city it is already chunked up into large piles
of white, by the plows, taking whatever they put down first like sand
and other gravelly thingies. Next it will be blackish and brownish, and
will sit for days on end, 'even unto the next generation' (of snow fall).
There are piles of it now that will be here until April. Oh ye of
the lands where it falls beautifully and watch it melt only to have it
fall again: rejoice, ye, that ye live not in the Missouri basin.

Maybe it was because of the Bill Murray movie?

We've probably got another 3 or 4 weeks of good weather left. Last week, relative humidity was at 100 percent. Yes, groundhogs day the movie was very popular but I also read the NY Times regularly.

Speaking of superstitions: it rained in Charlotte last night, which is not unusual, but the front was accompanied by thunder and lightning, which is somewhat unusual so early in the year. Later in the year, the Piedmont Plateau has a very high incident of lightning strikes. However, to the point: I thought last night when the lightning was being displayed of a saying that my grandmother used to say when it lightninged so early in the year; but I could not think of the entire piece. It went: "Lightning before...." The rest remained in the *cloud* of the *fog.* Anyone help?

I don't know the one you refer to, but there are lots around like that.
"April: A full moon in April brings frost.
If the full moon rises pale expect rain.
Winter; If you bite into an apple and it has a hard skin, it's
going to be a hard winter.
The weather each of the 12 days after Christmas will indicate the
weather conditions for the 12 months of the following year.
The winder the band of brown on the banded wooly bear caterpillar, themilder the winter.
Note the first day of snow: it will correspond to the number of
winter storms.
The more silk on the ears of corn, the more snow will fall.
If Nov. l, St. Martin's day, is cold and dry, winter weather won't last long.
The more nuts squirrels gather in the fall, the more severe
the winter. The bushier their tails, the more it will snow.
Cut six onions in half and designate a month to each onion half.
Scoop out the middle of each half and fill it with salt. If the
salt melts, bad weather will prevail for that month.
There are others, one about something before St. James' day.
I don't remember.

And we have more snowdrops coming later this week: just when most of the pretty stuff melted.
And that leaves only the piles of black brackish stuff on the curbs, corners, and parking lots.

Oh, I am so jealous!! But at least we've had nice cold weather the last couple of days; none of that namby-pamby stuff in the 50's (around 12.7ºC). Give me zero any day--in either scale.

Cold is good? That picture looks to me like hell frozen over. Maybe very cold is good. I have never experienced temperatures lower than 12-11ºC.

eta: That picture is fascinating. I have not been able to get it out of my mind all morning for some reason.
