I still like the classy feeling of using the old terms even if you do have to look themup.
violin maker v.s. luthier
horse shoer v.s. farrier
basket maker v.s. ??? What does v.s. mean?

I still prefer luthier and farrier (and I know a violin maker and horse shoer who do as well) but that is because I have romance in my soul (v.s.  any ability to spell or type) PS the farrier specialized in orthopedic shoes for horses.

A violin maker is a luthier but a luthier isn't necessarily a violin maker. I know a luthier. I'll ask him if he's ever made any violins.
Likewise a horse shoer can be a farrier but a farrier doesn't necessarily shoe horses.

A violin maker is a luthier... Not to be confused with the English surname Luther which comes from luter (a lute player) or the German surname Luther which comes from the Greek for 'liberator'...

a coal basket? vs a coal scuttle?
i like the old specific names for crafts too.
some are pretty simple, (glover!) others, a require a bit of thought--farrier and collier..
and there are different classes of work..
the collier (coal miner) vs the breaker--some one who works above ground breaking the coal into sized lumps-- (goose egg was one size as i recall.. but there were other sizes..(anyone?)
in textiles, there were the spinners (spinster when they worked from home)
weavers and fullers..
