(Forgive me. It's Monday. And I really do want to know!)

I really do think they're just considered to be part of a full beard, then.

Yes, they would then be called... a beard.

Burnside's were also unique.

The Wikipedia entry tells us that sideburns are ”grown on the sides of a man's face, in front of the ears”. So much for growing a pair behind the ears or across the nose or forehead; if I were to succeed in growing a pair of such “patches”, I'd need to come up with a name for them.

Are these the ten commandments and a lot more?

5) They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corners of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh.

How strange. And this one:
27) Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.

What would be the corners of the head? ( the chin, maybe? )

14) Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling-block before the blind, but thou shalt fear thy God: I am the LORD. That this needed to be forbidden might mean that people used to do that?

If you were to succeed in growing such patches, you wouldn't need to come up with a name for them; other people would certainly do it for you! ;0)

This is the book of Leviticus that folks of a certain persuasion are fond of quoting to support some of their kooky ideas on what is moral and what is not. For example, it is an abomination to mix linen and wool, as well as to eat either lobster thermidor or fettuccine alfredo or engage in certain sexual acts. Go figure.

OTOH, it could mean that the B of L is less old than imagined. If the Earth is only 8K years old, then the B of L was probably written a couple of seconds ago.

Thanks for giving the Grand Tour of Kentucky State Parks.
I've chosen Natural Bridge, Pennyrile Forest and Green River Lake
for my -would have liked to have been there- list.

Assuming Beth is still around to read these answers I have another question for her: What is a vandyke called if it is part of a full beard?

What are your shorts called when you have on long pants? What do you call the footies when you're wearing knee socks? What kind of sandals do you have on when you're wearing boots?

Perhaps this is useful? http://www.worldbeardchampionships.com

I've heard the sculptor's endeavor described as removing the material that is around the sculpture. The work is in the mass of raw material somewhere, by that line of thinking. A full beard can be approached the same way. There could be a van dyke in there, or a fu manchu, or a goatee, or mutton chop sideburns—I'll not try to hit all the possibilities.

That is an interesting and right comparison, though perfectly opposed to the outgrowing sculptures Myridon's link shows.
(incredible excesses of beard culture) \:\)

All these strange prohibitions seem to have had the purpose of setting the Israelites apart from other groups that worshipped other gods and making them culturally distinct. Perhaps the worshippers of some Canaanite deity had certain hairstyles in his or her honour!? Leviticus states that all those laws were designed to teach them to be a "holy" people, that is, a separate people. And yes it is a curious mishmash of moral, theological, social, cultural, agricultural and ritual laws and regulations all jumbled together.

 Quote:
14) Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling-block before the blind, but thou shalt fear thy God: I am the LORD. That this needed to be forbidden might mean that people used to do that?

It still does need to be stated, as human nature hasn't changed. I've been away the past few days and driving home three or four hours through the fog last night I was listening to the radio. There was a blind guy describing what it was like to grow up as someone born blind. And he certainly described his high school experiences in those terms! Sadly, some people will always take advantage of disabilities, for their own gain or even amusement.

In one of Sheri S. Tepper's books, a primitive culture is visited by a space traveller whom they mistake for a god. After all the planet's problems are solved, the space traveller leaves with the parting remark "Don't let anyone mess with your heads!". The religion splits in two - one side doesn't cut their hair (no barbers) and the other side allows crazy people free reign (no psychology/psychiatry).
