Pyrrhic victory comes to mind.

Update: Pyrrhic victory only came to mind because I associated it with pyre instead of with Pyrrhus, king of Epirus.

Welcome Henry,
your Stevens quote is particularly apt right now as my family deals with a big medical/life/family decision. The great difficulty is indeed to burn away the dross and see the true issues.
