In 1348 Edward the III was dancing with the Countess of Salisbury when her garter fell off.
He picked it up and placed it on his own leg, saying to those present :
Honi soit qui mal y pense.
"Evil be to him who thinks evil of it."
It subsequently became the motto of the Order of the Garter, the highest order of English knighthood.
Can anyone give me the correct pronunciation of this motto?
"HON-EYE SO-IT KEY MELL E PEN-SEE" ?
Thanks.
Edit :
I need to know because it forms part of something I have been asked to read at a discussion group on Tuesday.

I've always pronounced it something like
On-ee swa key mahl ee ponse. Remember that French has five vowels, ong, ong, ong, ong and ong.

As I could never better Max's French pronunciation, I'll just add that "Honi" has the stress on the second syllable (On-'ee), and that apparently the spelling is archaic. I am told that in modern French this would be spelled "honni".

I would do it as
UN-ee SWA kee MAL* ee PONZ
translated as "Evil to him who evil thinks"
but then I learned it in 1953 or '54, so it is indeed archaic.
EDIT: * Phonetics of MAL could have been better. It's the same A as in SWA above, which is like the A in SWAT

Good effort, wofa, but of course you're not blessed with the vocal purity for which Zilders are rightly renowned.

Wouldn't ever TRY to render "pense" into an American equivalent. Sticking to ponz, like Lily Pons, is about as close as I can come!

HL
to pronounce "pense" properly, take the sound of the "oun" in ounce and add the "p" before and a sibilant "s" after.
Salut
P-oun-ss
