In Australian English, and I think also in British English, we would say one of the following.

I read volumes 1 through to 9.
I read volumes 1 to 9.

From what I hear on US TV shows, I think that it would be common in the US to say something like:

I read volumes 1 through 9.


Is this the most common form in the US? Is it a relatively recent way of saying things?--OP, wordorigins

Interesting q bears discussion. In my opinion "to" excludes 9 and usage to the contrary is abominable
