It's interesting how aiguillette went from a word for the part to a word for the whole: aiguilettes are now the cords (tipped with aglets) that some soldiers wear on their uniforms. From the Late Latin acicula, acucula 'ornamental pin'. Which reminds me of the Latin for safety pin: fibula.
