Yeah yeah we've done this before. As Dr Bill would say, YART me no YARTs. I just came across a new (to me) list that I thought I'd share with y'all (or you-all, in this case):

Beefhide
Bug
Busy
Do Stop (I *love that one)
Drop Rock
Hand Shoe (straight from German?)
Hi Hat
Jinks (no Hi here)
Mousie
Mud Lick
Oddville (I gotta visit this place)
Ordinary (this place, too)
Rabbit Hash
Soft Shell
Uno

(I trust Jackie and Alex and any other KYers will attest to or challenge the validity of this list)

Great list! Mudlick? What would? I've heard of salt licks, but mudlicks?

And there are other Ordinarys. I suspect that there was a function of a place called Ordinary. Ordinance?

Hoppin' right next door a bit, I recall a town in Tennessee
that William Least Heat Moon pointed out in Blue Highways, his backroads jaunt around the US: Nameless. (always liked that one) Nameless, Tenn.

Here's a list of Kentucky towns/cities. Yep, there's an Oddville, in Harrison Co., which I don't even know where is.

My personal favorite is Nonesuch, Kentucky. http://www.bbonline.com/ky/nonesuch.html You could come up with some funny slogans, like "There's no place like Nonesuch."

I grew up in Alabama, where we have towns like Smut Eye, Lick Skillet, and my personal favorite: Enterprise.

I've heard of Mudlick, before and thought it was one word, but never been there and no idea where it my be in the state. Never heard of any of those other places. I have heard of French Lick, Indiana, though.

It would be funny if one had a vantage of French Lick from the town of Smut Eye.

eekonk, MA

Town
Population 2000: 13,425
Metro area: Providence

On the Rhode Island border

One tradition indicates that
the name derives from
Algonquian for "outlet,"
another says it means
"black goose" and a third
says "skunk"

I have heard that that's where the name for the wood pussy with the perfume came from

Getting through hell is the bliss that leads to nirvana.

"Boston" is a corruption of "St. Botolph's town." And there, St. Botolph Street was
a row of houses of ill-fame.
For quite a few ;years I did my shopping in Buzzards Bay, MA. Natives sometimes called
it Buzzards Gulch.

And then there's just plain old Egg Harbor, Dub-Dub...I guess that's the one that Duck, NC would be sitting on directly.

By the looks of the weather there's only going to be one town in South Jersey come Monday...Blizzard Whiteout! Cool! but the flooding prospects of a major nor'easter on a full moon tide here at the coast...not so cool.

Also, if you go to Zoom Level 5, you can easily find Sault Ste Marie. Both of them. [cross-threading-e]

We have a Paradise, too. It's contiguous with St. John's. I have a friend who lives there, and we were just mulling over the oddness of "I live in Paradise" this weekend. Then again, Newfoundland is full of odd place names, which I believe is also somewhat YART-y, so I won't mention any.

Except Dildo, in case there was anyone in the universe who hadn't heard of it yet.

If I want someone to Kissimmee in Florida, then I might have to go by way of Sugar Land in Texas, to ensure that I have Sweet Lips in Tennessee.

Don't worry about your Tum Tum and your Walla Walla in Washington, or even your Hoo Hoo in West Virginia; it's your Square Butt in Montana that should concern you.

You can't make Hot Coffee in Mississippi with the Coldwater in Missouri; nor should you try to make Java in South Dakota with the Badwater in California.

If you don't like Surprise(s) in Nebraska or Indiana, then don't have Intercourse in Alabama or Pennsylvania, because that could cause an Accident to happen in Maryland.

If someone could Aimwell in Alabama, they might be able to Cut-n-Shoot in Texas with Two Guns in Arizona.

If you want to maintain Fidelity in Mississippi, don't go near the Hooker(s) in Oklahoma, California, or Arkansas; or near the Love Ladies in New York; and certainly nowhere near Horneytown, North Carolina. You might be safe in Virginville, Pennsylvania, though.

You might not like living in a Plain City in Utah, but that would be better than living in a Big Ugly city in West Virginia.

If you want a Sandwich in Massachusetts, you might have to travel south to Mayo, Florida for the dressing, and then back north to Sandwich Landing, New Hampshire, for the Rye bread.

It must be embarrassing to not know how to spell in Embarass, Minnesota; they must not be Smartt like the folks in Tennessee and the folks in Embarrass, Wisconsin. And the people in Typo, Kentucky wish they had a Secretary from Maryland.

In Virginia, there is one Threeway, and two Fourway(s); but those are pretty Ordinary, unless that is the Bane of your existence, which makes you Cuckoo, then you would be in Nuttsville, and would Needmore Simplicity in your Pocket.

If you are Dunmovin in California, but don't want to miss your Last Chance to see Timbuctoo, then you had better drive your Honda to the Roads End, by way of Mystic; If you end up in Secret Town, just have Confidence that someone will Rescue you, and You Bet everything will be Grand, then.

P.S. Since I am a stranger, I hope I haven't made any faux pas......I keep seeing referrences to Yarty's......is that a good thing or a bad thing?

And just how do I enable the smilies?

And what is the one thing (two? three? four?) that is a no-no, as in unwritten laws?

Thanks.........

RubyRed,

For smileys and other such, you type the word smile within square brackets []. (If I do that it will, of course, print a smiley.) There are other emoticons and you can find them under the FAQs, "Using Markup". To make things a different colour use name of colour between the square brackets where you want the colour to begin, and /name of colour where you want it to end. I can type an example with spaces to show you:

[ red ] RubyRed [ /red ] should result in RubyRed if you leave out the spaces.

YART stands for "Yet Another Rehashed Topic" and some people find it insulting to be accused of YARTing, but we haven't really come up with a better name, though we've tried. And re-hashing isn't always bad because there are always new people coming in here who may not have discussed something before.

And the unwritten law - well there is none, really - if there were one, it would be something like "Be nice to people, and try to stay away from potentially incendiary topics." But above all, "Be nice to people" is really The Rule.

Ruby, try this link - much about the ethos fo AWAD is explained here.

(and, FWIW, the hot link, above, is achieved by putting url in [] at the beginning of the addie and /url in [] at the end!)

And if you quote what somebody said you can put quote in square brackets before the quotation and /quote in square brackets after the quotation. Some people prefer just to put the quotation in a different colour to their own message.

Thanks from another beginner too.
Nova Scotia isn't as bad as Newfoundland but I did drive through Upper, Lower and Middle Economy. I also passed a roadsign in a completely flat landscape that said "Watch for flying rocks", never did figure that one out.
