hogwash :: ketchcraft

choose one:

a) the art of astral projection, causing one's spirit to leave one's body and appear to other people

b) the Wiccan practice of casting spells to ensure the proper functioning of food preparation

c) the art of sauce making

d) delicate woodwork detailing such as may be found decorating pews and pillars in churches and cathedrals; the art of carving such detailing

e) an ancient Masonic body of metaphysical knowledge attained through the practice of necromancy and ritualistic chant

f) the art of making ketchup

g) the hangman's craft (from Jack Ketch, a famous London executioner, c. 1663-1686)

h) a type of strong brown paper used esp. for making lunch bags or sacks (also formerly, used to refer to a sackcloth garment worn by an offender when doing public penance)

i) the process of manufacturing masts for single-masted sailing vessels used primarily in light craft obstacle maneuvers (handling) and racing

j) the art of drawing with tomato sauce

k) the creation of artworks meant to be impermanent, i.e. sculptures made of sand, ice, or foam

l) whittling

m) cooking with ketchup

n) Scandinavian cabinetry making

o) If it isn't boat building it sure as hell ought to be.

(entries from Wordwind, slithy, wofa, W-O'N, *TEd, Bingley, Faldage, bonzai, mg, ASp, 'sick, Jeepers, consuelo, joe f.)

*I think his was more of a protest-vote than an entry but.
---

also, I'll take this opportunity to announce a new, occasional hogwash® auxiliary award, the 'Armadillo Roadside Memorial' (ARMil®); nominations for this award are open in concert with the regular voting, and any decision on the awarding of the ARMil will be arbitrarily and capriciously taken by the hogmaster® (i.e., me) based upon nominations received from the hogminions (i.e., y'all).

In the spirit of wanting a place to put my Sedgewick, I'll cast my vote for N, if'n that's the Scandanavian entry.

Can't remember for the life of me if it was Sedgewick or Sedgwick...?

Ah yes, I been known to dabble in the ephemeral.
My heart and my mind cast two votes for...EE

My vote for the Armadillo Roadside Memorial Award goes to
                     L

for whittling.
Whittling can't be anything else; whittling is whittling.

I'll reject all but d and k because all the others link to ketchup or small boats, and are therefore spurious.

d) delicate woodwork detailing

k) the creation of artworks meant to be impermanent

d...k...d...k...dee..kay...de.cay...decay! Impermanent!! That would make it K!!!

So I'll vote for D, of course.

I like b and g but I'll go with D.

A question about the ARMil® award. Is it to be awarded to a single person (e.g., the perpetrator of i for ignoring the nothing-to-do-with-boats clue) or a category (in this case the ketchup daffinitions) and therefore to be shared among the perpetrators?

All right. You got some serious spaining to do re:

A)

B)

E)

G)

H)

L)

N)

Well, everone knows the true daffinition is the art of covering small boats with ketchup...but that would've been too obvious, huh, ron?

While D is a beautifully crafted daffynition, and K is plausible, but incorrectly punctuated -- dead giveaway--... after some musing I think I'll take E

My gut says G, 'cause woodworking 'n' ketchup just don't go together.continuing the fine art of Zappa-esque deduction so abstractly extrapolated on the other thread...right, Dub-Dub?

A protest is gotta be more of a post than my lazy-ass version of a guess...

I liked D, but then I saw N and I did all I could to resist, but.

You would be right, except that I adapted the adjective "all" according to the principle of my erstwhile Math 11 professor* who once redefined "many" as "that means, 'one or more' "...

and here I had gotten as far as a) astral projection <> sailing by dead reckoning, b) food preparation <> ketchup, g) the hangman's craft <> sailing through the Water Gate (by dead reckoning?), h) making lunch <> ketchup, ..

I have been scoring rather too well of late, so shall make a dtermined effort to restore the natural order by choosing N, despite a hankering for G.

"O" sure is appealing, but I'm going with the majority (I think - didn't count!) and saying Gee.

Now that my punctuation has given me away, all I can hope for is a good guess. Let's try D. I do know the difference between i.e. and e.g. It must've been the late hour.

well, the dictionary answer is (g), which some of our British players knew from Jack Ketch, who was indeed an infamous hangman.

as to the rest of the results, I'm a bit strapped for time now but I'll get to it eventually..

Thanks for the link, wofa!

Executioners used to extort payment form their executionees under the threat of not being swift and painless?
That's certainly some sort of milestone in the utter depravity of the human spirit.

here, finally, are the compiled results:

a) the art of astral projection, causing one's spirit to leave one's body and appear to other people [Bingley]

b) the Wiccan practice of casting spells to ensure the proper functioning of food preparation [Faldage]

c) the art of sauce making [bonzai]

d) delicate woodwork detailing such as may be found decorating pews and pillars in churches and cathedrals; the art of carving such detailing [mg] wofa, Faldage, slithy

e) an ancient Masonic body of metaphysical knowledge attained through the practice of necromancy and ritualistic chant [ASp] milum, ASp

f) the art of making ketchup [musick]

g) the hangman's craft (from Jack Ketch, a famous London executioner, c. 1663-1686) [Forgotten English®] W-O'N, Jackie, Bingley, bonzai, mg

h) a type of strong brown paper used esp. for making lunch bags or sacks (also formerly, used to refer to a sackcloth garment worn by an offender when doing public penance) [joe friday] TEd

i) the process of manufacturing masts for single-masted sailing vessels used primarily in light craft obstacle maneuvers (handling) and racing [Wordwind] Rubrick, birdfeed, rav, Jeepers

j) the art of drawing with tomato sauce. [consuelo]

k) the creation of artworks meant to be impermanent, i.e. sculptures made of sand, ice, or foam [slithy] dxb

l) whittling [wofa] consuelo,

m) cooking with ketchup [WO'N] Coffeebean

n) Scandinavian cabinetry making [Jeepers] Wordwind, musick, sjm

o) If it isn't boat building it sure as hell ought to be. [TEd]

this round was much too easy, as the actual def'n amassed five(5) votes plus dxb defined it exactly (garnering bonus points).

coming a near second in the voting was Wordwind's one-masted entry--this after my pointed hint that it had nothing to do with two-masted ships (which is the def'n of a ketch). I don't remember being that devious in the past that you should expect this. on the other hand, I had a similar def'n in hand until Wordwind blew it away with hers.
