I often hear the word MO used to describe criminal on tv what does it mean?

MO stands for modus operandi, latin for "mode of operating", or something of that nature. It's the signature of the criminal, as offenders frequently operate in the same manner to commit repeat crimes; e.g. using a rope to strangle someone each time a serial murderer kills, as opposed to using a rope one time, a knife the next, etc.

This actually stands for "modus operandi", a methodical
or habitual way of doing something. For example, the
purse-snatcher's MO was to always pick elderly women who
were walking alone.
