A couple of catch phrases which have been on my mind of late:

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

and

Party like it's [ ] (insert year or decade of choice)

Can anyone shed light on their origins?

Bingley

I'm not sure about being afraid, but the "party like it's 1999" came from a Prince song, the title of which I forget. perhaps it's "1999"

Sounds like the tag line to a slasher movie. Halloween XLII or Nightmare on Elm Street.

[pruple]Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Bingley, I know the source for this and I just can't place it...it's definitely science fiction, alien related I think, and I'm thinkin' The X-Files here. The only citation I can find that attaches it to a movie quote is for the film Addams Family Values, but I doubt that was the origin. And it seems there was an earlier form of the phrase, Don't be afraid...be very afraid., which gestated into the more familiar one (and popular, I might add, almost 3 million hits on Google, used for book titles and all!) Curious the origin is so evasive...and if we can't find the source that planted this phrase then all I can suggest is: Be afraid. Be very afraid.

I went to IMBD (thank you), searched in Quotes, and found:
"Animaniacs" (1993)

Yakko, Wakko, and Dot: Be afraid. Be very afraid.
,

and

Fly, The (1986)

Veronica "Ronnie" Quaife: Be afraid. Be very afraid.

The lady from Louisville has it right. To see a poster from Cronenberg's remake of "The Fly," click on http://www.moviegoods.com/movie_item.asp?path=/Assets/product_images/1020/&file=155230.1020.A.jpg

So was it Jeff Goldblum who originally said it, Alex? Mebbe that's why I have a shadow memory of it...I loved the remake of The Fly, saw it at least twice, and I like Jeff Goldblum.

I like Jeff Goldblum.
Me too! Treat yourself and rent "Earth Girls Are Easy" It is hilarious and the cast is chock a block with talent in their early days : Vestron Pictures, Kestrel Films Production.
Here's how it starts : three aliens (Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carey,& Damon Wayans)land in Geena Davis' pool in Los Angeles! Credits note : "introducing Julie Brown"
Great when you need a laugh.

File under FWIW:
As I recall, the tagline for the X-Files was: The Truth Is Out There...

I don't recall who in the movie (if anyone) uttered that line, but I do recall the ads.

A similar movie line that I have always enjoyed was in "The Empire Strikes Back" when Luke Skywalker boasts to Yoda that he is not afraid, and Yoda replies in his distinctive voice: "You will be. You will be!"

Just can't let all of this talk about The Fly pass without mentioning the original with Vincent Price...a real classic! 'Course, they didn't have the special effects then, but still...

Have not seen him in anything lately, WW, - not since Jurassic Park or Independence Day - but he is starring in a TV movie next Wednesday on NBC. Believe it's called War Stories. Here's your chance to get a Goldblum update.

set me straight if you disagree. With where he's come to be. Sounds like the beginning of a song to me: Set me stra-a-aight if you disagree; with whe-e-e-re he's come to be... (Hey, I didn't say it was a GOOD song!:-)

Has anyone seen him in anything very recently in which he seemed to have developed?

Check out "Igby Goes Down", particularly if you enjoy black humour. Goldblum, Sarandon, and a McCulkin(!) are all joys to watch.
