You find it used in a lot of English novels from about 1860 on to about the end of the 1930s. Mostly in the context of an English public school during the 20th century though, I think.

We used to play the card game Hearts a lot, and after the pass we would express our dismay by ritually insulting the person who had just passed us the offending cards.
