Hey, I've got a great word that everybody should know--and it's in all dictionaries--and I just learned it. And it's a neat word. But I may be last to know it and everybody already knows it. However, if most of you don't know it, we could play it. It's a word that looks like a word that everybody already knows, but its meaning is different from what I expected it to mean.

So, I'm going to write it here below, and, if it's a word that all of you definitely already know the definition of--come on, don't look it up!!!--then just laugh me out of Dodge. But don't assume you definitely know the definition, unless you definitely know its definition. Here's the word and I'll duck for cover if everybody already knows it:

prolate

If many of you don't know what it means, then we'll play, ok? And you can send (PM) your fantasized definitions to Wordwind.

Best regards,
WW

Important P.S.:

If a few of you know what it means, just write here that you know, but don't give it away because there may be a lot of people out there who don't know what it means, and we can play. That would work, wouldn't it?

Okay, I don't know and I'll venture looking silly. Thinking of percolate, which indicates movement, I'll go for "roll over." (And now I've GOTTA look it up. I can't stand not knowing.)

OK. We have two definitions that have been submitted, so the game is on.

Deadline: A week from Sunday and that should be about September 8th, right?

Don't be embarrassed if you don't know this word even though tsuwm and CapK know it.

And this word will come in handy if you ever have to take a vocabulary test. It's a useful word.

Best regards,
WW

Well, if you ever have to take a vocabulary test that prolate happens to be on...

And I promise my bestest promise to carry this Hogwash through to the end. ~ WW

My Dear Miss Percolating wordwind,

Running a Hogwash is a pretty big chore for a nice, sugar and spice, namby-pamby, bright and intelligent, woman.

Remember what happened the last time you had the audacity to buck the authority of the Great tsuwm and conduct a Hogwash of your own......Yes, that's right...ninety-five per cent of the Hogwash regulars bolted the board and moved to Australia and the game was never finished.

Only I remember the Hogwash word in that ill-fated game. The word was "diamorphinferiorism".

Only I knew the answer. And I was cheated out of two points.

That was then, this is today and I know the definition of prolate . Please promise that this time you will stay until I get my two points.

Milum.

PS:
TEd always gives his Hogwash games a certain individual flair,
like "Holiday Hogwash" or "les Hogwash des rois.
But if you prefer just plain ole Hogwash... [shrug]

Dear milum,

You wrote:

I have it on good authority that 91% of 'em have since then been kicked out of Australia and have come home waggin' their tails behind them.

Don't think there's need to worry your big old haid 'bout that scene bein' played out again.

I realize they took it real hard my asstsuwming tsuwm's role and all that, but their Australian experiences matured 'em and they be much more reasonable beings now consequently. I mean, if'n you're kicked out of Australia, that's a pretty soberin' proposition for near-'bout anybody. So, I think they'll look on my runnin' this hogwash round with a lot more kindness and compassion. And even if they bolt again--and I don' thin' they will--you have my promise to finish this round out. But I cain't guarantee no points for you. How many did you git las' round, fer instance?

Bolt regards,
WW,

You can vote for A...or for B...or even for C....

But that's all we've got at this point.

So far we only have three definitions, and one of them is the actual definition, so please send in one if you can think of one.

I think a Hogwash with three definitions would be very unusual.

However, if only two are sent in, I'll resuscitate OrionsBelt and Scorpionsting and one other sock puppet I've forgotten to write a few more. Now this would probably be upsetting to tsuwm. But what are you gonna do if there's a Hogwash that has so few definitions?

Thank you very much and have a nice day.
WW

Just got another definition. Hooray! We're now up to four entries, including the real definition.

Let's see, with Orion's, Scorpion's, and whoever that other person was [in case of emergency]--that would be a total of seven entries....

But, thinking positively, there's still six days to go.

Contest regards,
WW

Hip-Hip! We have just received (old Wordwind, Orion, Scorpion, and whoever the other one is) three more daffintions, so we're up to...seven, including the real one.

If, uh, three more come in, then we'll have a pretty good round to play.

Thank you, thank you, for the daffinitions submitted so far.

And we're all going to learn eventually the true meaning of prolate, a word we all need to throw around at the next social event.

Best regards,
WW

Just to let tsuwm know this round of Hogwash will be registered. We now have ten definitions; no sock puppets necessary unless someone's hiding beneath the fabric.

tsuwm: Are you now going to regularly feature a quiz on your email mailing? You know? Multiple choice every day? Do you miss running Hogwash that much?

And to everybody else playing: We have three more days for submissions--till as late as you want Sunday night. I'll post the round of entries on Monday, so send any other definitions to Wordwind via PM.

Best regards,
WW

>Multiple choice every day?

fwiw, wwftd evolved as follows
1) a word (that's it, just a word - ycliu)
2) a word with a basic definition (by popular demand)
3) a word quiz ('cuz I got bored)
4) the expanded version, with etymology OR citation OR exegesis OR sumtin'

I haven't run the quiz for a month of sundays -- the unsubscribes are already starting to arrive..

Well, sortof. When I wake up Monday morning, I'll start to put the round together into some kind of readable form--no edits other than spelling.

Anyway, the round will be posted here sometime on Monday, so, if you have a definition lurking around in the back of your head, bring it to the front, type it out, and send to Wordwind via PM.

Back burner regards,
WW

Last call for daffinitions!

Will post the round sometime tomorrow, so if'n you got a definitive viewpoint of what prolate could mean, send it on over to Wordwind.

WW

Dear Hog,

mistress or master whichever you prefer, before I vote tomorrow, am I right in assuming that those who know the correct definition to the word "prolate", like capt and tsuwm, have "recused" (a legal term) themselves from participation?

So if I know the real definition and have not recused, will I still get two points?

Post edit: Sure wolf-a-doc, lets hear you say "recuse" after plowing a ten acre field and five rapid shots of J.W.Dant.
Hmmmm?

I tend to like to bend rules. Now this is what I would suggest to make the round more fun:

1. Seems anybody could vote--I think that's in the bylaws wherever they are.

2. If you already know the definition, then it seems a considerate thing to do would be to vote for something other than the real definition. Instead, be generous and vote for the definition you found to be most interesting. I mean, it's not like there's a big prize out there or anything.

3. If you don't know the definition, then you could vote either for the one you thought was the actual definition and get yourself a useless, but happy point if you guessed correctly... or: vote for one that you thought was clever

4. Sometimes, however, people vote for their own definitions as a kind of strategy to mislead the waylaid.

Should have this round up and running later in the PM.

WW

well, since milum knows the word, all we have to do is wait for him to vote and then follow him, that way we all score!

[or not]
