Just now I made a post, telling Keiva, aka Rosten that I thought it the height of insolence to ask Wordsmith to help him, after he had hinted he would sue Wordsmith, and so obtaining an undeserved re-instatement. Imagine my surprise, on checking my dictionary to be told there no such word. Same with online dictionary. I have used that word for over sixty years, and am baffled not to find it in dictionary.
Another ancient defintion of insolence: To pee through someone's front door keyhole, and then ring bell and ask how far it went..
PS typo in first draft corrected per PM from Jmh, whom I thank for helping me avoid diminishing impact of the post.

>the height of isolence
I think that there may have been a "little something" missing when you searched, Bill - easily done!
(from Cambridge International Dictionary of English)
insolent adjective (of a person or their behaviour) intentionally and rudely showing no respect At school he was the sort of child that teachers would describe as insolent. As Moreau begins to talk, the shadowy brown eyes fix you with an almost insolent directness.
insolently adverb
insolence noun [U] She had that dumb (=silent) insolence that teachers find so disturbing.

I had one teacher upset by my outspoken insolence. I had her try to hit my hand with a ruler, and she was so dumb she hit her own hand hard when I snatched my hand away just in time. I spent the next two years being taught at home by my mother.

Dear Capfka: Considering that school never let me study with a piece of apple pie on a plate with a glass of milk, and my cat and dog for company, I thought school at home was a bargain. If I had known that might be my punishment, I would have been insolent sooner. The year before the ruler incident, that bimbo substituted for my teacher, and caught me whispering. It was well known that she used a rather unusual punishment, supposed to be very humiliating. The culprit was ordered to crawl into the kneehole of her desk, and be cooped in by her sitting with her knees in kneehole. As I went up the aisle, I said to my fishing buddy, Eddie Skorzewski loud enough for whole class to hear:"Bet you a Hershey bar I'll be out in less than two minutes." I got into the kneehole, she moved her chair to block me in. There was a very loud clock ticking, and I waited exactly a minute before sticking my head out and saying loudly in a pathetic voice: "Let me out of here - it stinks!" I got out.

ah, Unca Bill, you remind me of the punishment used by my Grade 8 teacher (never on me, of course!): If he caught you talking in class, you had to stay back at the end of the day and talk to yourself for five minutes. The punishment increased in length by five minutes, every time you were caught talking on a given day. I remember going back for something I'd forgotten, on a day when the class blabbermouth was stationed in the window, carrying out his punishment - I think he was "in" for something like 20 minutes! - there he stood: "I see a car driving along Van Order Drive. O, there's a bird. There's a woman walking along. Nothing is happening now. The grass is green. The sky is blue...." etc. Thought that made the punishment fit the crime quite nicely! I rather thought you were going to tell us a different tale, when you said she cooped you up in the kneehole of her desk.... Let us go in peace to love and serve the board.
