OP One of the most resented injustices of English law in colonial days was indefinite imprisonment of men merely suspected of crime. To remedy this the Constitution made "habeas corpus" one of the most important rights, meaning that a judge could order the suspect brought to court for a determination of his culpabitity and possible entitlement to release.
