Cross-threading a little from BYB's Hmmmm? thread, I went a wandering and found a site called http://www.dumpaguy.com so - being a girl, and always wanting to polish up my armoury, I had a look around. Interestingly enough (slowly getting to my point) they've got a list of all the words you can use in place of the expression: Bullsh*t!

Balderdash
Poppycock
Jibberish
Blague
Houey or Hooey
Gobbledigook
Gunk
Bunk
Bunkum
crock
Hogwash
Bologna (Baloney)
Rubbish
Trash
Froth
Nonsense
Junk
Goop
Bull
Yadda Yadda
Lame
Puffery
Dross
Fluff
Idle Talk
Prattle
Tomfoolery
Jive
Mumbo Jumbo
Looney Tunes
Jaw
Rigmarole
Palaver
Song and Dance
Double-talk
Gas
Drip
Trumpery
Hoohah
Tommyrot
Rot
Hot air
Slipslop
Twaddle
Whangdoodle
Tosh
Hokum
Bilge
Punk
Flapdoodle
Piffle
Gook
Fudge
Pishposh
Windbaggery
Malarkey
Guff
Faddle
Fiddle
Blatherskite
Meshuggaas
Horsefeathers
Claptrap
Spew
Jiggery-pokery
Eyewash
Vomit
Flummadiddle
Flimflam
Blah
Bosh
Fiddlesticks
Codswallop

I personally like the idea of using pishposh or meshuggaas (pronunciation anyone?) purely because they don't make any sense.

Anyone got any others they'd use?

Meshuggaas

Yiddish for crazy. Maybe it will appear as one of this week's words of the day.

Oh [brown]POOP[/brown], Juan! However, here's a quote from the site that may help you:

"If you know any words that fit this category and that are not included below, please email the wizard at wizard@dumpaguy.com"

E-mail away...

Meshuggaas

Yiddish for crazy

I knew there was a reason I liked it! Any hints for pronunciation, so that I can use it correctly Geoff? Anyone?

I didn't see load. A la "That's a load." A load of unspecified product... gets the point across nicely.

I'm partial to windbaggery and codswallop. The latter reminds me of the cornobble discussion. to wallop with a cod, i.e. the cod's wallop

"Meshuggaas -- Yiddish for crazy."

No; it's yiddish for craziness (noun). Crazy (adjective) is "meshugeh".

From "Glossary of Yiddish Expressions" on line, which transliterates somewhat differently into our alphabet:
Meshugass - Madness, insanity, craze
Meshugeh - Crazy
Meshugeneh - Mad, crazy, insane female.
Meshugener - Mad, crazy, insane man

Meshuggaas: Yiddish for crazy ... pronunciation

Making allowances for the NY accent:

Mish - uh - GOSS
(that's "uh" as in "schwa" and "goss" as in "gospel")

and it means more craziness-the-noun than crazy-the-adjective

The root is Hebrew, interestingly enough, not German.
