Anybody remember the joke about the guy who got expelled from the nudist colony because when playing leapfrog he balked. Repeatedly.

12:26:39 2002 Which reminds me.....the modelling discussion board, to which I also belong, has a very interesting (and veeeeery looooong) thread about male models getting an erection while posing.

This is really over the top, and totally inappropriate for this board. I wasn't going to dignify this thread with any sort of comment, but this has gone too far.

AnnaStrophic: do you mean the entire thread? I thought the basic issue--which has, admittedly, suffered a digression from the linguistic to the, um, anatomical -- was a legitimate question. Two words (nude and naked) that seem to denote the same condition but have slightly different connotations were discussed.

Yes, Alex, as Jackie noted elsewhere, the question itself is interesting and legitimate. I was referring in particular to the post I quoted. That's all I gots to say on the subject.

Well clearly the only proper thing to do is to bring back the nudity. How many terms/synonyms/expressions can you come up with nudity? Let's see...

Naked as a jaybird
In ones birthday suit
au naturale

Personally, I am opposed to nudity. If God had intended for us to around unclothed then we would have been born that way!

Dear Keiva: you remind me of the words of urologist who was teaching us how to catheterize a male patient, a procedure which is one of the ultimate indignities a man can endure. Fraught with fear and frequently with pain.
" Remember that the patient's penis is as near and dear to him as yours is to you."

dr. bill, you knew my response would be medically limerical, didn't you?

There once was a man with a hernia,
Who said to his doctor, "Goll dern ya,
When fixing my middle
Be sure you don't fiddle
With matters that do not concern ya!"

(thanks Uncle Bill!)

My apologies - I shoulda known it would be too much to introduce that link to a group that doubtless includes people too anal to be able to deal with nude modelling at all.....It is actually a fascinating discussion - but maybe only for those of us (male OR female) who are comfortable with our bodies. (Nevertheless, I have had a PM from someone who intends to check it out, so it certainly wasn't posted in vain. Someone was interested, so there! )

The naked/nude debate, I'm enjoying enormously. More, more! (there was a naked/nude debate on the models's discussion board, and interestingly enough, though none of them are linguaphiles, they all had a lot more to say about the dichotomy, and they said it a lot more eloquently. But perhaps that's just because it's a subject that's closer to their hearts than it is to anyone's here, and they obviously think about it a lot more - spending so much time nude as they do. I'd post a link to that excellent thread but now I is tremblin' in me boots.)

For the list of naked/nude words/expressions:

in the buff
naked as the day I was born
without a stitch on

Thanks Jackie! (it will take more than that to get me to stop posting! [dander-up-e] [but not dandruff-up-e!] )

nah, I was just busy and missed an evening on AWAD....Should not be here tonight, have to model in Belleville tomorrow, all day, and it's an hour and half drive away.

Actually, it may have been posted in vain, after all. When I tried to follow the URL I was directed to a login page for the discussion board rather than the thread itself. being not really inclined to join another discussion board I didn't go any further.

Maybe there could be some interesting views on when to use "further" and when to use "farther".

I was a nude model in college and I am a belly-dancer still and now, and I don't care to discuss anal proclivities here. This is not the place. . I don't think these parts of my life have anything to do with this board, and I politely ask you, immodest goddess, for the last time, to knock it off. If you're looking for "members," I'll be happy to help you find an appropriate internet chat room. Last I heard, AWAD is for word junkies, among whom I count my own bodily/brainly comfortable self.

ASp, others may not share your view, and I'd think you can implement your view, without prejudice to others, by taking an attitude of:

Don't like it, don't read it -- but don't boss it

Though perhaps the most notorious perpetrator of ribaldry when the board gets dull, I truly sympathize with AnnaStrophic for her feeling strongly that we should devote more energy to discussion of interesting words.
However, it is quite easy to ignore improper posts.

Heh heh. Guilty I reckon. I confess, the distinction of when to use "farther" vs. "further" has always eluded my grasp. Can anyone come up with a pithy expression along the lines of "'I' before 'e' except after 'c'" to help me remember the proper use? And preferably, it should contain the words "Fuhrer," "farthing" and the phrase "for her." Or something to that effect...

My personal usage has always been:
farther when speaking of physical distance - He walked farther down the street.

further for other (more metaphorical?) uses - We must study this further.

agreed, although etymologically farther is merely a variant of further, due probably to the analogy to far.

His eye balles further out, than when he lived. -WS

I wasn't going to mention this, but as long as sparteye brought up the subject elsewhere:

Bottom line, ASp, is that you still owe mod-god an apology for your rudeness. Not that I am so unrealistic as to expect to see one, which would be atypical for this board.

IMHO, of course.

Debunker, back off. NOW.

Keiva - thanks for your continuing gallantry (I do love it!). However, I have decided to put ASp on "ignore" (as we real models who are comfortable with our bodies call it, on our discussion board). I just don't take anything she sez seriously. So the same would hold true for any apology she might make.

I mean, how CAN you?! (take ASp seriously, that is)

Besides, I probly seen all dem sites to which she is referring. Seriously. [nudge-e] [nudge-e]

The old familiar pattern that when one's behavior is in question, turn to attack someone else.

Even better, do it under the anonymous name "debunker", to avoid having responsibility for your own words.

But debunker, I have no doubt that ASp is capable of speaking for herself. She, not shy about telling us what she thinks of other's behavior, surely cannot object to others commenting upon hers.

My sister teaches English and asked her pupils (or "learners" as we are now required to say in disgusting PC-ese) to discuss how Shakespeare uses nakedness as a metaphor in Macbeth. You know... "and pity, like a naked new-born babe" and all that.

Well, one replied with words to the effect that there were "nude babes" in the play. Somehow the fact that that comment is so funny seems to go to the heart of the naked/nude debate.

Welcome Phyllisstein! (great name! - and I see you have been a member of AWADtalk longer than I have, chronologically speaking, so perhaps it is presumptuous of me to welcome you....?!) Your presence is requested in the "where are all the boks?" thread....

I would love it if you would elaborate on this....I thought it was funnier because of the pupil ("learner" indeed! some pupils resist learning, doesn't they?) not realising that "babe" meant "baby" in this context....not because of the nude/naked dichotomy. [questioning/confused-e]

Ta, modgod, for the greetings (and for all your heavenly, irreverent posts).

I would love it if you would elaborate on this....I thought it was funnier because of the pupil ("learner" indeed! some pupils resist learning, doesn't they?) not realising that "babe" meant "baby" in this context....not because of the nude/naked dichotomy. [questioning/confused-e]

You are quite right about the "babe" thing. But it seems also to point out the difference between nakedness, which is a clinical fact, and nudity, which has connotations of sensuality. The fact that said learner instinctively switched to "nude" when he thought of babes kind of says it all. Or maybe not. Maybe I just wanted an excuse to tell my funny story.

Anyway I would suggest that a big majority of people would refer to a "naked" baby but a "nude" pin-up.

For a very different, bitingly-satirical take on a different story of nudity, see the poem Nothing to Wear in bartleby, at
http://www.bartleby.com/102/157.html

Quite long, but well worth it and amusing throughout. Helen will appreciate the references to old New York.
