Yikes! Well, I waited too long to do individual replies, so I'll just say thank you all very much for an extremely warm welcome. ALthough I will point out, Whitman, that "Attack of the Eye Creatures" was so ineptly made that, in addition to the occasional accidental shot of tennis-shoe-wearing monsters, the end credits listed the title as "Attack of the the Eye Creatures", and it was recorded in MST3K lore with the double "the" forever after.

Again, thanks, all! I'd better get busy and start posting somewhere else besides the thread I started, I reckon!

Good to see you here, Hinch! We need some new, interesting blood here and it looks like you're the guy! (MST3K notwithstanding... hehehe)

BELATED WELCOME Hinch

Well, as stales predicted, I'm here representing Sydney, Australia (I've asked the other 3 million Sydney-siders and they agree that I should represent them) with the above - albeit late - welcome! Away from computer for almost a full four days (only enough time to pop in and advise CapK that politicians don't have culture and let AnnaS know that I was not insulting her car).

Hinch, since you're already up to 5 posts, I can see you've started well. Keep it up!

Shame, stales, shame! You should know it's actually Derryn Hinch, and ... that's life!

Hev

Hey - do you guys get to see Red Dwarf? Sounds like it may be the same genre - ie comedic sci-fi (with an accent like Dunc large's).

Hello Hinch and a most warm welcome to you. Good to have another member of the Air Force Family around.

Gee, I leave the computer for a day or two and miss all the fun!

You may be interested to know that AWADers who can get to Michigan in June are having a real live get together ... search Wordapalooza and Wordapalooza II for details. Would be nice to have a real Newbie there amongst us!
Meanwhile, enjoy the craziness!
Aloha!

Thanks, tsuwm! Still lurking. It occurred to me, after I joined, that it ain't real easy to jump into, or start, a thread. For instance, one can't just post an entry like this: "So! Catenary! Some word, huh?" That's called, in the newsgroup world, a "Me Too" post. So I wait, in my lazy way, for an opportunity to get into the fray. Still having fun here, tho.

I dunno, Hinch. It's at least as good as some of my posts. But perhaps you were aiming for a higher standard????

LOL! Nope, sparteye! Just trying to live up to my iffy standards. Plus, as a newby, I'm trying to start off on the right foot. Gimme time...once I shed the "stranger" tag, I'll post lots of really inane and boring stuff. Just you wait!

Catenary? How many of us remember Simon Stevin, Belgian mathematics luminary, who described properties of catenary, and was so proud of it he had one put on his tombstone?

Scientific American: Connections: Tick Tock: August 1998
... This arcane catenary matter had originally been the obsession of a Dutch noodler
named Simon Stevin, who in 1585 also had the novel idea of decimal coinage. No ...
